Grade Level: Fifth Grade | Content Area: Science | Duration of Unit: 5 weeks
Unit Overview
Big Idea:
- Understanding the indicators to determine whether a chemical or physical change took place
- Learn how temperature changes can affect the state of matter (solid, liquid, gas) and understand the differences between physical changes (like melting or freezing) and chemical changes (like rusting or burning)
- Understand the basics of electricity by learning the difference between static electricity (like when you get a shock) and electricity we use every day (like in lights and gadgets).
- Build and test simple circuits to see how electricity flows and what materials help or stop it.
- Discover how magnets work and how electricity can create magnets. Conduct experiments with permanent magnets and make your own electromagnets to see how they are used in different ways. This will help you see how electricity and magnetism are connected and why they are important.
