Grade Level: Third Grade | Content Area: Social Studies | Duration of Unit: 3 weeks
Unit Overview:
Third graders will explore the pre-contact lifestyles of American Indian groups from across what is now the United States. Students will interact with artifacts and literature that show how Indigenous peoples used the resources available to them to survive in a time before electricity, cell phones, and cars. Third graders will connect this learning of ways of life for historical Native Americans to the ways of life for modern Native Americans, who have tremendous influences on our world, including in government, STEM, art, music, and dance. Finally, students will take what they have learned public, by choosing a project that advocates for the continued dignity and respect of Native peoples, who are still here and thriving. We hope to inspire students to learn more about different Nations through this tour of the North American continent in Indigenous Peoples of North America.
